Remote Education Provision: Information for parents

Remote education is the delivery of teaching and learning when students are unable to attend school due to a national lockdown, an enforced closing of a bubble by Public Health England or enforced self-isolation. Remote learning is delivered online through the Google Classroom platform.

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to students and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education at Denbigh High School if local or national restrictions require students to remain at home.

The remote curriculum: what is taught to students at home?

Students will be taught lessons that follow the pre-planned curriculum of each subject.

In order to achieve this all teachers and students are aware of and understand the following protocols:

  • During times of enforced national lockdown resulting in the school closing to both staff and students, teachers will share lesson resources and work (including pre-recorded material) through Google Classroom following the normal school timetable. This means a student will receive five lessons a day from their various subject teachers.

  • All remote learning that is set will be achievable for all students to complete within an hour unless stated otherwise by the class teacher. Students are expected to complete the work at the end of each lesson unless otherwise instructed by the class teacher. 

  • Teachers will provide feedback to students regularly on any work completed in a remote learning scenario. This can be through automated self marked forms, marking and commenting on assignments and through pre-recorded whole class feedback videos.

  • Remote teaching and learning typicality will be a blend of teacher led video/audio aligned to a slide presentation of the lesson. Teacher modelling, student activity, assessments (including self/peer assessment) and links to school approved learning websites will be key components of lessons. 

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

Yes, we teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school with the exception of a full practical curriculum eg. physical education.

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

All work set during periods of remote education can be completed within the lesson time. 

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

Google Classroom is the key platform for learning and communication in conjunction with the GSuite of apps and students are directed to school endorsed learning websites like GCSEPOD, Kerboodle and Active Learn from this platform.

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

The school will support students who do not have access to online learning at home through the provision of appropriate resources and, where appropriate, technology.

There will be clear instructions for parents and pupils on how to engage with and submit work if online access is not available.


Engagement and feedback

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

As a school, we expect that all students will engage with the online learning that is set. We also understand that home learning circumstances may require an element of flexibility - for example, if a studentl cannot be online to access their first lesson of the day at the agreed time, we would expect them to engage with the lesson later in the day, or contact the school if this presents an ongoing issue.

We are committed to providing support, advice and guidance to parents, including alternative strategies where appropriate.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

As work is set online, staff are able to regularly monitor levels of engagement and completion of work. Any students who are having difficulty engaging in remote learning will be identified and supported by the school through parental engagement.

Parents will also receive regular updates of student work, including information about incomplete assignments set on Google Classroom so long as they have accepted the email invitation to receive updates sent last term. This will help parents support students in the completion of work at home.

A tracking system is in place to monitor attendance and student engagement with remote learning. This will indicate the need for support tailored to the specific needs of students.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Students can be assessed in a variety of ways including the marking and commenting on assignments set on Google Classroom, self marked quizzes and work set on other approved platforms. Feedback will be given routinely through this assessment as well as through pre-recorded whole class feedback videos were relevant.

Teachers will also use assessment to plan and adapt their remote learning and subsequent lessons to support the progress of students in long periods of enforced lockdown.

The progress of students will be monitored by class and subject leaders against the relevant subject key progress indicators and a record of this progress will be kept. 


Additional support for students with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some students, for example students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families and we will work with parents and carers to support those students in the following ways:

  • All the Support for Learning  team provides support for students through their expertise and pedagogical content knowledge.

  • The Support for Learning team meets year leaders and form tutors once a week to address any concerns about students with SEND. 

  • Key Workers will contact home weekly to ensure high quality communication with parents and to provide support for both students and parents with access to remote learning.

  • Where required differentiated materials for SEND students will be provided, (both online and in a learning pack), as appropriate.


Remote education for
self-isolating students 

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

Students who are not in school due to self isolating will access the same remote education as outlined in the above section “The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home”.
