Students embark on dream voyage

6 July 2009
Denbigh students James Awofisan and Kulsuma Begum from year 11 have joined the Tall Ship Stavros S Niarchos in Newcastle and have now set sail on the Tall Ships Youth Trust's Voyage of Achievement.
James and Kulsuma who have never sailed a Tall Ship before are part of a 48 strong youth crew from 24 schools across England and Wales who will develop life skills and learn first hand about geography and weather systems as they sail the Tall Ship, Stavros S Niarchos from Newcastle via Europe to London.
They boarded the ship with nothing but a rucksack containing the bare minimum needed for the 10-night seagoing adventure layers of clothing, trainers, toothbrush and jackets. There is no room for fashion accessories onboard Stavros S Niarchos and mobile phones will be out of range for most of the voyage; students will be expected to give 100% of their time and energy to supporting their team and looking after the ship.
The students will scale the masts to set and stow sails, helm the ship and scrub the decks. While the new experience of sailing a Tall Ship will be a tough challenge in itself, the novice sailors will be doing it around the clock.
Past participants have found that the experience of life on the high seas has given them the confidence to tackle other of life's challenges head on, and has also sparked new friendships.
The Voyage of Achievement will sail under Tower Bridge, London at 1600 on Friday 10th July 2009 before docking alongside HMS BELFAST in London for the official welcome reception.
Tim Law, Tall Ships Youth Trust Marketing and Operations Director, said: For many this voyage will be a life changing experience. A Tall Ships Voyage takes people out of their comfort zone and they will find things within themselves that they did not realise were there. Tasks such as climbing the rigging or helping prepare dinner for 67 people can give young people a real sense of achievement and self worth.
Denbigh Student Kulsuma Begum said that she is honoured and proud to have the opportunity to go on this exciting adventure.
