Denbigh wins Luton Schools Cup

21 July 2008

On Thursday 10th July 8 of our Year 7 pupils won the Year 7 Town Cricket Tournament. The final was a conclusion to the Year 7 Cricket Festival which took place on the 25th June at Luton Regional Sports Centre.

The festival started for us with a game against Stopsley. We batted first and set a reasonable score of 68 but unfortunately it wasnt enough and Stopsley defeated us in the last over despite Ayaz Mushtaq and Attif Khan taking some good wickets between them.

The second game showed a lot more promise as we played Lea Manor. We batted first again and set an enormous score of 126 with particularly good batting scores from Mohin Akhtar and Immad Khan. Lea Manor were no match for our bowling and only managed to score 67 thanks to more good bowling, this time from Fehzan Ashraf and Ayaz Mushtaq again. Our third game was to prove a tough fixture against Icknield. This time we batted first and set a reasonable score of 84, with good batting from Nishit Biswas. Excellent bowling again from all of the boys meant we kept Icknield to a score of 72, taking us into the semi finals.

The semi-finals saw us face Barnfield West who batted first making a score of 88. Thanks to excellent batting from Nishit Biswas, Shujat Ali and a solid performance from Hussain Raza we surpassed their score by 10 runs.

This led us to the final 2 weeks later which matched us up against Stopsley who we had previously lost to in our opening game. We won the toss and elected to bowl first. Despite Stopsley scoring a lot of runs we managed to take 8 wickets which meant they lost 5 runs each time. The wickets were taken thanks to excellent bowling again from Attif Khan, Ayaz Mushtaq and Mohin Akhtar. Stopsley finished on 89 which was a reasonable target for us to chase. All of the boys batted exceptionally well and with 3 overs to spare we had surpassed their target. This meant all we had to do was protect our wicket.

The final pair in bat were Attif Khan and Hussain Raza, who put in their best batting display to date and guided us home to victory. Denbigh had won the Luton Schools cup!! During the tournament every player contributed to our victories, although special mention needs to go to Nishit Biswas - who led like a true captain by not getting out in the whole tournament, Attif Khan our leading wicket taker, and Mohin Akhtar and Immad Khan our top run scorers for the tournament.
