Denbigh RAISE at Lord’s Final for the Second Year Running!

Pupils from Denbigh High School enjoyed a day to remember when they travelled to London to take part in the Lord’s Taverners National Table Cricket Finals on Friday 7th June at the Home of Cricket: Lords!

Denbigh were one of 12 teams to compete in the Nursery Pavilion at Lord’s Cricket Ground, for the right to call themselves National Champions. More than 300 schools and over 3,000 disabled young people took part during the regional heats of the competition, now into its 21st year.

The team that consisted of Musaab Adrees (captain), Zayan Ahmed, Mohammed Zohaib, Nayim Rafi, Lorenzo Cilukalo, Safwaan Chowdhury and Safraz Muquith finished 9th in the finals, an improvement on last years performance where they finished 10th. The team had been looking forward to the big day since winning the Regional Competition in May. The drive down was filled with much anticipation and excitement, with Zayan Ahmed commenting on how excited but nervous he was feeling even though he was part of the team that reached this stage last year.

Upon arrival the team settled themselves quickly and began practicing as they awaited the other teams. Once the competition began Denbigh got off to a slow start losing their first three games but getting better with each game. They were cheered on by Muhaysin Ahmed, Riaz Uddin, Sabaat Khan, Miss Walcynzska, Mr Lloyd-Jones, Mr Mistry and Headteacher Miss Neely-Hayes. Mohammed Zohaib saying how he enjoyed having the extra support there. The next three games saw Denbigh being victorious in all those games, finishing on a positive.

There were particular highlights throughout the day when Musaab was interviewed for the BBC and newspapers, with Musaab quoting how special it was to be on live TV, saying that Table Cricket has really helped to develop his confidence by being the captain of the team.

The team also got to meet and have their picture taken with Radio 1 DJ Greg James, who also spent time playing Table Cricket with the team.

All in all it was another fantastic day out at Lords, with the team continuing to improve hoping that each year brings more success.

From everyone at Denbigh we are all thoroughly proud of the Table Cricket team and their achievements.
