Denbigh High School

"High achievement for all is our shared responsibility"

Business Skills Education Partnership Event

On Wednesday 27th February, Denbigh welcomed a number of external visitors for a careers speed networking event with some year 10 students. Launched by Luton Borough Council, BESP (Business Education Skills Partnership), is an initiative linking employers with schools to boost awareness of the working world. This event was planned so that our guests from very different organisations, had a series of six-minute meetings and answered questions relating to their career and/or employment sector. Discussions included topics such as qualifications needed, effective employability skills, career progression, day to day role and rewards. Careers which were represented ranged from midwifery to marketing, business administration to engineering, catering to biomedical science among others!

We are very grateful to the organisations who contributed to the session: Chiltern Learning TrustLBC Catering, FMM Sugarcraft Ltd, Lockheed Martin, University of BedfordshireGiggs and Bell Estate Agency, JNB Publishing Ltd, Europa Components, The Army, Greystone Solicitors, Kier Construction and the NHS. This hugely successful event was the first of it's kind at Denbigh and we now plan to host more in the future.

Our visitors were very impressed with the maturity of participating year 10s with one commenting:

"[...] your students are a credit to you. Excellent questions from very engaged and intelligent young people."

Our students were equally impressed and picked up some good advice. When asked what the most important point she learnt

"Your grades are not the only factor that affects your chance of employment. There are other skills, for example communication." Narjis Khan 107

"The most important point was to have a passion in your occupation otherwise you will lose interest very quickly." Hamzah Miah 107
